If you frequently work from height, then you may be wondering what clothing you should wear with a safety harness and how to do it safely. There are many resources available online concerning how to safely wear a safety harness, but what about your clothing? Here are a few safety harness clothing tips to keep in mind when working at height...

Don't Wear Too Many Layers of Clothing

Although there may be bad weather at times, it's important to think about the amount of clothing you wear beneath your safety harness. If you wear too many layers (especially thick layers such as coats and woolly jumpers), then you may find that this decreases the efficiency of the safety harness.

After all, a fall harness is also called a body harness, so it is designed to be worn as close to your body as possible. It should be a tight and snug fit to ensure that you can't wriggle or fall out of it in the event of a sudden fall.

Try To Invest in Harness-Safe Clothing

When the weather is cold and miserable and you're working at height, the last thing you want is to be wearing too little. As mentioned in the above point, it is important to reduce the number of layers you have on when wearing a safety harness, but how can you do this and stay warm at the same time?

Thankfully, many retailers have thought about this and you can purchase clothing that is adapted for use with a safety harness. For example, you can buy jacket safety harnesses with front and rear attachment points, quick release buckles and easy access to the D-ring in case of a rescue effort.

Wear Tight and Snug Clothing When Possible

If the weather allows, try and wear tight and snug clothing wherever possible. This could include fitted trousers and long-sleeved thermal t-shirts. These clothing items are great to wear when working from height as they can prevent your clothes getting caught which can prevent you from serious injury.

If you're unable to wear tight or snug-fitting clothing, then you can always purchase all-in-one coveralls which will ensure that any loose clothing is enclosed.

Wear Sturdy Boots

Non-slip footwear is vital if you're working at height - for safety, and for your comfort. In the case of an accident, sturdy non-slip boots may be able to provide you with ample support until your rescue. It is also advised to wear steel toe capped shoes in the event of a fall to prevent your toes from being crushed!
