BS EN 361:2002 (commonly called EN 361 for short) is a British standard that sets out the requirements for full body harnesses that are to be used as a form of personal protective equipment against falls from height. This standard covers harness design, ergonomics, materials and construction. It also specifies requirements related to testing, product markings and the information supplied by the manufacturer.
In practical terms, an EN 361 safety harness must be capable of arresting a fall and evenly distributing the forces involved across the wearer's whole body so as to minimise the risk of injury. The harness must also hold and support the wearer's body while they're suspended and awaiting rescue.
In order to receive EN 361 certification, harnesses must be subjected to both static strength and dynamic performance testing. This ensures that EN 361 safety harnesses are suitable for the role they play in protecting workers from falls. The full BS EN 361:2002 standard can be purchased from BSI.
