If you’re working at height, you may benefit from using a safety harness kit. Whatever your task is, we’ve got the kit for you.

But what’s in a safety harness kit? Read on to find out more.

Safety Harness Kits

As the name suggests, the main piece of equipment in a safety harness kit is a safety harness. From the simplest basic restraint kit through to the most advanced, they will all have a safety harness. Without one, it would be like a broken pencil: pointless.

But a harness on its own is also pointless. You’ll need a connector, and a lanyard. Not the kind of lanyard you might see in an office, however. Often called a ‘fall restraint’ or a ‘work restraint,’ a restraint lanyard is adjusted to sit at a certain length, and stops you from moving into an area where there’s a risk of falling.

Restraint lanyards are usually made of textile rope or webbing. They can also be made of shock-absorbing material.

You will also need harness connectors to work safely at height. These connectors may be hooks, or carabiners, and will work to connect your harness to the rope, and the rope to a suitable anchor point that forms part of what you are working on.

Fall Arrest vs Fall Restraint

A safety harness kit is designed as a personal fall restraint system: it should restrain you from falling. So, the lanyard you use will likely be a fixed length, and you will have to connect it to a suitable anchor point. That fixed length will mean you can only work within a certain area, and this should stop you from reaching a place where you could fall. A fall restraint system, therefore, prevents you from falling in the first place.

A fall restraint system should ideally come before a fall arrest system, if possible. It’s more cost-effective because it won’t require shock absorbers, nor does it necessitate a rescue plan in the event of a fall.

Sometimes, a fall arrest system is necessary. You may be working at height on a fragile surface, such as on a roof, or you may be working near the leading edge of a fall hazard. So, if you fall, ideally you want to stop before you fall too far. This is where a fall arrest system comes in. It stops you during your fall. A fall arrest system will allow you greater freedom of movement, but with that comes an accepted risk of falling, and thus the need for arresting the fall before it becomes a more serious problem.
