What does 'fall arrest' mean?
'Fall arrest' refers to a system of equipment that stops a person from hitting the ground after they have fallen from a height. Fall arrest equipment is designed to catch you and keep you from hitting the ground in the event of a fall, as opposed to fall restraint equipment which aims to prevent a fall from occuring in the first place.
Fall prevention is always preferable to fall arrest, but there are certain situations (e.g. working while suspended) where it's impossible to eliminate the risk of falling from height. In those scenarios, fall arrest systems should be used to prevent workers from colliding with the ground or nearby structures.
